Summary of the book

Death Bringer is the sixth book in the series and also the third and final book in a trilogy within the series that focuses on necromancers, a type of sorcerers who can manipulate death energy. The main plot and theme of Death Bringer is about a prophecy that foretells the emergence of a powerful necromancer called The Death Bringer, who will be able to break down the wall between life and death, in a process known as The Passage. The Death Bringer would have to kill around three billion people in order to stop the rest of the world from dying.

The main characters of Death Bringer are:

  • Skulduggery Pleasant: A skeleton detective who works for a secret organization called The Sanctuary that protects magic from mortals. He is witty, sarcastic, brave, loyal, and skilled in elemental magic. He is also one of Valkyrie's mentors and best friends.

  • Valkyrie Cain: A teenage girl who is Skulduggery's partner and apprentice. She is smart, courageous, stubborn, compassionate, and talented in various types of magic. She is also one of The Death Bringer's potential candidates.

  • Melancholia St Clair: A young necromancer who is chosen by Vandameer Craven, a high-ranking cleric in The Temple (the headquarters of necromancers), to be The Death Bringer. She undergoes a painful process called The Surge that enhances her powers.

  • Lord Vile: A mysterious and feared necromancer who wears a black suit of armor that can absorb death energy. He was once Skulduggery's alter ego when he was corrupted by his power during a war against an evil sorcerer named Mevolent. He returns to aid Melancholia in The Passage.

  • Darquesse: Valkyrie's true name and dark side that she accidentally unleashed when she was possessed by a Remnant (a parasitic creature that feeds on emotions). Darquesse is extremely powerful and ruthless, and seeks to destroy the world.

The book starts with Melancholia being tortured by Craven in order to increase her power and prepare her for The Passage. Meanwhile, Skulduggery and Valkyrie investigate a series of murders that are connected to a mysterious bald man with a goatee who uses rainbow dust, a substance that can enhance magic. They also encounter new enemies, such as the Jitter Girls, a pair of creepy twins who can move very fast and have razor-sharp teeth, and Bernard Sult, a former Sanctuary agent who is now working for the Revengers' Club, a group of villains who want revenge on Skulduggery and Valkyrie.

As the book progresses, Skulduggery and Valkyrie discover that the bald man is actually Solomon Wreath, a necromancer who is opposed to Craven's plan and wants to stop The Passage. He reveals that Valkyrie is also a potential Death Bringer, and that she can choose to either help or hinder Melancholia. He also tells them that Lord Vile has returned and is working with Craven and Melancholia.

Skulduggery and Valkyrie decide to join forces with Wreath and his allies to stop The Passage. They also have to deal with other problems, such as Valkyrie's family issues, her relationship with her boyfriend Fletcher Renn (a teleporter), her attraction to Caelan (a vampire), her struggle with Darquesse, and the betrayal of Tanith Low (a swordswoman who was possessed by a Remnant).

The book ends with a climactic battle between Skulduggery and Lord Vile, Valkyrie and Melancholia, Wreath and Craven, and Darquesse and everyone else. Skulduggery manages to defeat Lord Vile by using his true name, which he had hidden from everyone. Valkyrie manages to stop Melancholia by convincing her that she does not want to kill billions of people. Wreath manages to kill Craven by stabbing him in the heart. Darquesse manages to escape from Valkyrie's body by tricking Fletcher into kissing her.

The book concludes with Skulduggery revealing his true name to Valkyrie, which is Kes. He also tells her that he loves her as a friend and a partner. Valkyrie tells him that she loves him too. They then decide to continue their fight against evil, while also trying to find a way to stop Darquesse.
