The Tau comes bundled with a web-based application to visualize the camera output in real-time on a computer: the Tau Studio Web App. Our Tau Studio App takes the realtime depth data coming from the Tau Camera and visualizes it as a greyscale image, a depth map, and a 3D point cloud the user can manipulate - pan, rotate, and zoom. The Tau Studio is based on a Python program and a web app built with HTML and javascript.


You can also use the Tau Camera Python library to create your own applications with depth data from the camera. The library provides an easy-to-use API to configure the camera and capture depth data, and is compatible with OpenCV. The API is 100% open source, has rich documentation, and comes with example programs you can work with right out of the gate.

Vehicle autonomy and driver assistance systems rely on a combination of a balanced mix of technologies: RADAR (RAdio Detection And Ranging), LiDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging), cameras and V2X (vehicle -to-everything) communications. These technologies often have overlapping capabilities, but each has its own strengths and limitations.


Long Range Radar (LRR) is the defacto sensor used in Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and highway Automatic Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS). Currently deployed systems using only LRR for ACC and AEBS have limitations and might not react correctly to certain conditions, such as a car cutting in front of your vehicle, detecting thin profile vehicles such as motorcycles being staggered in a lane and setting distance based on the wrong vehicle due to the curvature of the road. To overcome the limitations in these examples, a radar sensor could be paired with a camera sensor in the vehicle to provide additional context to the detection.


Since then, LiDAR sensors have had great size and cost reductions, but some of the more widely used and recognized models still cost a lot more than radar or camera sensors, and some even cost more than the vehicle they are mounted on.


Cameras: Unlike LiDAR and RADAR, most automotive cameras are passive systems. The camera sensor technology and resolution play a very large role in the capabilities. Cameras, similar to the human eye, are susceptible to adverse weather conditions and variations in lighting. But cameras are the only sensor technology that can capture texture, color and contrast information and the high level of detail captured by cameras allow them to be the leading technology for classification. These features, combined with the ever-increasing pixel resolution and the low-price point, make camera sensors indispensable and volume leader for ADAS and Autonomous systems.


All four technologies have their strengths. To guarantee safety on the road, we need redundancy in the sensor technologies being used. Camera systems provide the most application coverage and color and texture information so camera sensor counts in vehicles are projected to see the largest volume growth close to 400 million units by 2030. While LiDAR costs are coming down, so is the cost of radar systems. Both technologies are also poised to see large percentage growth and volumes reaching 40-50 million units by 2030.


Autonomous driving is enabled by two sets of technologies: V2X and ADAS. V2X (vehicle-to-everything) utilizes wireless communication technology to facilitate real-time interactions between the vehicle and its surrounding objects and infrastructure. On the other hand, ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) make use of built-in sensors to detect and calculate the surrounding environment. Both technologies complement each other to ensure a safe and seamless autonomous driving experience. In this article, we will focus on the technologies behind ADAS and take a deep dive into the three types of commonly used sensors: camera, radar, and LiDAR.


First introduced in the form of a backup camera by Toyota in 1991, camera is the oldest type of sensor used in vehicles. It is also the most intuitive sensor since it works just like our eyes do. After decades of usage for backup assistance, car cameras had undergone significant improvements in the 2010s as they were applied for lane keep and lane centering assists. Today, camera has become the most essential component of the ADAS and can be found in every vehicle.


Vision-like sensory. Just like our vision, cameras can easily distinguish shapes, colours, and quickly identify the type of object based on such information. Hence, cameras can produce an autonomous driving experience that is very similar to the one produced by a human driver.


Recognizing 2D information. Since camera is based on imagery, it is the only sensor with the capability of detecting 2D shapes and colours, making it crucial to reading lanes and pavement markings. With higher resolutions, even fading lines and shapes can be read very accurately. Infrared lighting is also equipped with most modern cameras, making it just as easy to navigate at night.


Poor vision under extreme weather events. Its similarity to the human eye also makes it a major disadvantage under severe weather conditions like snowstorms, sandstorms, or other conditions leading to low visibility. Therefore, the camera is only as good as the human eye. Nevertheless, most people do not expect their car to see better than their eyes and would not fully rely on their car under such extreme conditions. In fact, Tesla had decided to abandon radar and use camera only for its Autopilot system, starting with its newly produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
