The movie begins with Virendra Singh (Alok Nath), a rich businessman who lives in Bombay with his wife Shalini (Reema Lagoo) and son Vikram (Sanjay Dutt). He is addicted to gambling and loses all his money on Diwali night. He borrows a large amount from his friend Gajendra Singh (Raza Murad), but loses that too. He returns home with Gajendra and his brother Shakti (Shakti Kapoor), hoping to repay them somehow. However, Shakti tries to molest Shalini in her bedroom, and Virendra kills him in self-defense. He then escapes from the house with Gajendra and Shakti's men chasing him.

Virendra boards a bus that meets with an accident, leaving only two survivors - himself and a young heiress named Anju (Raveena Tandon). He adopts her as his daughter and takes care of her estate. He also changes his name to Sardar Rajpal and becomes wealthy again. Years later, Anju grows up and learns about her foster father's tragic past. She decides to find his wife and son and reunite them.
